Fulu Osaka: Ethereum’s Next Consensus Layer Upgrade
Ethereum developers have hinted at a new upgrade dubbed Fulu-Osaka. According to Christine Kim, a researcher at Galaxy Research, EthereCast developers recently held their 140th All Core Developer Consensus Call (ACDC), during which they discussed the upcoming upgrade.
Fusaka, Pectra, and Devnets 2 and 3
Alex Stokes, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, hosted the meeting, leading discussions on the development stage of the long-awaited Pectra upgrade and PeerDAS, as well as the naming of the next Ethereum consensus layer upgrade, which will be referred to as Fulu, like the star in the Cassiopeia constellation, but shortened to Fusaka.
This upgrade follows Pectra, which is currently undergoing testing. Notably, this is the next upgrade after Electra. The naming is not unusual as consensus layer upgrades are generally named after major stars.
Update on Pectra Development
In a recent meeting, Stokes provided an update on Pectra development, noting that a new specifications release for the upgrade has been tagged v1.5.0-alpha.5 and urged client teams to review it.
Pectra Devnets: Geth Client Issues on Devnet 2
Parithosh Jayanthi, Ethereum Foundation’s developer operations engineer, mentioned that the Geth client has produced a couple of invalid blocks on Pectra Devnet 2, which developers are investigating. Further, Stokes reiterated plans to launch Pectra Devnet 3 within the coming week.
State Hashes and Devnet 3
Saving historical block hashes in state has been updated in EIP 2935, which will be incorporated into Devnet 3. This is a semantics change that should not affect client implementations.
Other Milestones in the Ethereum Ecosystem
Ripple Labs recently minted some RLUSD stablecoin on Ethereum, positioning Ethereum for more business.
New Public Blockchain – Soneium
Sony Group has launched its layer 2 public blockchain, Soneium. This protocol is built on Optimism’s OP Stack and has backing from Startale. The public Ethereum layer 2 blockchain has support from Astar Network, Alchemy, Chainlink, Circle, Optimism, and The Graph. Testnet launches are expected soon.
Ethereum ETFs
Ethereum ETFs remain grappling to find their spot in the market.
Fundamentals Strengthen, Optimism High
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin believes that Ethereum’s fundamentals are stronger than ever. He praised layer 2 network Optimism for its work in standardizing asset transfers in the Ethereum ecosystem, citing its efforts to improve functionality and scalability.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Ethereum continues to evolve, with new milestones and upgrades on the horizon. The future of the Ethereum ecosystem is promising, and upgrades like Fulu Osaka and Optimism’s work will play significant roles in shaping its growth.
